Providence College Web Editor News – September 2025
Announcing Web Editor Surveys
Starting this September, Web Services is launching the Monthly Web Editor Survey. Each month, you’ll be asked to complete a short, four-question survey that’s quick to complete but big on impact. The two minutes you spend on your answers will help us better understand how you use the WordPress platform, what’s working well, and where we can improve. Learn more about the upcoming survey — and the treat you can earn for completing it!.
3rd Party Plug-ins, Software Integration and Our Websites

Looking for additional functionality on a providence.edu website? Your first step should be to reach out to Web Services – we may already have a solution in place (or can build something custom for you) that will do just what you need. Rarely, third-party software integration – via plug-in, iframes, embedded code or another method – may be called for. There is a process for bringing third party software functionality onboard – details are within the 3rd Party Plug-ins and Software Integration policy page.
Hyphenation Tricks
Have you ever had a long word such as “interdisciplinary” or “basketball” mess up your web layout? Maybe it breaks across lines in a weird way, mid-syllable, with no hyphen? This can be a problem especially when you’re using headings or larger text inside columns or other narrow blocks. That’s where the soft hyphen comes in. It’s a special bit of HTML that you can insert inside a word to suggest where it’s okay to break only if needed. If the line doesn’t need to break there, the hyphen stays invisible. Take a look at our blog post on how to use the soft hyphen, and give it a try!
Web Analytics Reports

Wondering how much traffic your site is getting? Which pages your users are interested in? Which are the most popular? Where in the world is your traffic coming from? Wonder no more. We can provide you with monthly, emailed web traffic reports that will provide you with that information and more. Simply send an email to web@providence.edu, indicate which website you want monthly reports for, and who/what email addresses you want the report sent to.
Images of People Wearing Labcoats

Do you edit one of our departmental science sites or use images of students and faculty conducting lab research? If you are using images that show faculty or students in the lab, ensure that everyone in the image is wearing gloves, lab coats, and protective eyewear. Using images of students and faculty without the proper protective equipment is a liability issue for the college.
