Creating a Post/Page
To create a post or a page, the first thing you need to determine is which type of content you’d like to create.
A post is intended to convey a single, short piece of content.
Posts are the best way to share an event announcement or a bit of departmental news. Posts can be surfaced in the posts block on any part of your site.
A page is a piece of static content that may change but is intended to communicate the core ideas of your site. This might be an “About this Department” page, a “All About Our Events” page, or a mission statement.
Both types of pages two main areas in common. The post or page title field, which must be filled out and is exactly what is sounds like, is the first.
There is also the content area, which is composed of blocks. For composing this content, refer to your Gutenberg training and to our web training styleguide.
We’ll now cover the things that separate a post from a page.
Pages
A page has, besides the main content area, a variety of display options. Our main theme has the option for several different page templates. All these templates preserve the basic Providence College branding but allow for some variety in look and feel.
The Web Services team recommends that you stick to the tried and true default page template. If you have a page that you feel might benefit from a different look, please contact us or come to an open lab to discuss.
Pages allow for either a left or a right sidebar. For more information, see Using Widgets, Creating a Left Menu, and Adding Contacts.
Posts
Posts allow for less display options (there are no post templates) but do have one distinct feature. Posts allow you to add taxonomies to help classify them. We specifically leverage “Categories” throughout the site.
For example, you could have posts categorized as events. Then you could insert the posts block on your homepage and have it show the most recent three or six or however many events. This would auto-magically update as new events are added to the site and only show the newest and freshest events.
To create a new post or page
From your WordPress administration screen, the black left hand menu lists both Posts and Pages.
If you hover over the type of content that you want, you’ll see a hover menu pop out, and you can pick “Add new” from there.
At this point, it’s elementary. Fill in the title, add some blocks, and you’re cooking.
